MOBERLY - The Echoes of Calvary Church pastor announced a memorial fund for the family of Eli Borntrager, the Amish farmer killed in a car accident Jan. 12.

Pastor Doug Coonce said the church intends to collect money for Borntrager's widow and five children. Coonce said the family won't sue the driver who killed Borntrager in an accident, but hopes the community shows support by sending donations to the memorial fund.

"This is a way that they can receive help to replace the horse or the cart," Coonce said. "No money will ever replace the loss of a life, but it will help with the family."

Coonce said the money will go directly to the family. He said the church does not have a goal in mind, but the community works together when incidents like this arise.

"This is a close community," Coonce said. "[The members of the Moberly community] take care of their own."

Debbie Miller, Director of the Moberly Chamber of Commerce, was not surprised by the memorial fund announcement. She said the effort shows how well the Amish community and the rest of Moberly work together.

"Well, it doesn't surprise me in the least that somebody took the initiative to start this," said Miller. "Moberly is really good about stepping up to the plate to help its community members. They have a really giving heart and giving spirit here in Moberly."

Coonce said anyone can donate money to the Borntrager family by stopping by the City Bank or mailing a check to P.O. Box 160, Moberly, Missouri.
