JEFFERSON CITY - Farmers' markets offer consumers the chance to put a face with the food they buy, cutting down on security and health concerns.

Because of the growing consumer demand to see where their food is coming from, farmers' markets are growing in number and popularity.

"Mainly, they're wanting to reconnect with the farmers and buy directly from them," said Lane McConnell, a marketing specialist with the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

According to the Department of Agriculture, there are more than 130 farmers' markets across the state. They're not only popular because of the business opportunities they create, but also because of the welcoming, friendly atmosphere they are often known for.

"When the market opens, it's like having a family reunion because everybody is just so happy to see each other," said Vera Gelder, a vendor at the Columbia Farmers' Market. "They're happy to see us and we're happy to see them."

To help encourage the entreprenuring growers, the department is holding workshops throughout Missouri. Not only will these help individuals start up new farmers' markets in their areas, they are also designed to teach how to market what's already there.

"Farmers are the producers, but they're also the sellers when you're doing direct marketing," said McConnell. "In these workshops we're talking about how to promote your market, how to advertise, selling skills."

In Columbia, buyers and growers don't have much longer to wait--the local farmers' market opens on March 22.
