COLUMBIA- Pednet officials are urging people to get off four wheels and onto two.

It's all about bike safety around town and Pednet wants you to know the proper rules of the road.

With the skyrocketing gas prices, Pednet officials are hoping to get more people out of their cars and onto bikes.

A group of cyclists, including Mayor Hindman and his wife, prepared for their final session of "Confident City Cycling," aimed at teaching people safe riding around town.

The program includes a written portion and hands-on riding experience throughout the area in hopes of teaching cyclists to avoid accidents.

Major accident zones include busy intersections around town where cars and bikes meet.  Sewer grates also pose hazards because they're just wide enough for bike tires to fall through.

Despite some road hazards, cyclists say pedaling is worth it.

"I think columbia is a very safe place to ride a bicycle from a facility type standpoint," said cyclist Tom Brinker. "One of the challenges is the blending of cars with bicycles and that's when bicycles and motorists need to work better."

Pednet officials say the "Confident City Cycling" program gives more confidence to cyclists, enabling them to lose weight and in some cases get rid of one family car.
