COLUMBIA - This spring the Missouri quarterback battle is a chase to replace a couple of Chases.

For the past few years, Missouri football fans watched Chase Daniel throw touchdown passes for the Tigers. His last toss won Mizzou the Alamo Bowl. But now it's Blaine Gabbert's show.

"He's been showing very good leadership qualities, but the best thing a quarterback does is lead by winning," said Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel.

Daniel knows about winning. He won 30 games as the Mizzou quarterback, more than any other Tiger.

"He could coach. We could hire him right now to coach quarterbacks. Don't tell him I said that. He can't emotionally deal with that," Pinkel said.

He's not on staff, but Daniel is in Columbia this spring, helping Gabbert and the other future Tiger quarterbacks learn the trade.

"They have so much more to learn. He's a sponge. He's learning stuff. He's learning the speed of the game and like I said, he has a long way to go and he'll be the first one to tell you that, but he's making progress," said Daniel.

"That's tremendous. The comfort factor, him coaching us up after every play. Telling you what you did and giving me compliments, good read, good throw, good ball placement," said Gabbert.

"It's great. He's a very sharp guy. It really, really helps us. No question. Obviously the guys he's coaching it means a lot to them because they have so much respect for him," said Pinkel.

Respect and a realization that there is work to do.

"Accuracy of course. Making plays when you have to. Like on that last two-minute drill. Converting that fourth down. You got to make something happen," said Gabbert.

And the defense notices that Gabbert has game.

"He's definitely got different things that Chase didn't have, Nothing against Chase. Chase was a great player, but Blaine's arm is really strong. He looks really good," said Missouri junior linebacker Andrew Gachkar.

"He's vocal. He gets everybody in the right position. Just like Chase Daniel used to," said Missouri senior linebacker Sean Weatherspoon.

If the winning continues, the Tigers might not let coach Daniel get away.

"It's different. I still have my competitive juices flowing. He asked for me to help out so I said sure. I didn't have anything else to do during this month. It's a pretty boring month," said Daniel.

Other than the NFL Draft.

Chase says he's going to stay and help the current QB's through the rest of the spring and then think about the NFL Draft on April 25th.
