COLUMBIA - Missouri's transportation system is going to need more than $31 billion over next two decades, not the $19 billion it first thought.

Lawmakers heard Wednesday about a number of transportation issues, with the results of Amendment Three being highlighted.

Some lawmakers think Amendment Three might be the key to funding future projects. Missouri voters passed that amendment in 2004. It allowed two billion dollars to go to construction on the highways and roads around Missouri.

Lawmaker Neal St. Onge says the state might have to go back to the voters for something similar to Amendment Three.

"It was a great first step. MoDOT has responded wonderful, acted on it wonderfully," St. Onge said. "Look at it, look at the situation and where are we going to move from there."

MoDOT will continue to work with money from Amendment Three. They claim to be starting eight more projects by the end of the year.
