COLUMBIA - Police chased down a man on Highway 63 Monday afternoon between Columbia and Hartsburg.
The chase started when a trooper spotted a car without a front license plate at Highway 63 and Old Miller's Road. The officer then attempted to pull the man over. The suspect avoided the trooper by turning around and heading south towards Ashland.
It ended when the man's car jumped a guardrail and slid off the highway at Demarco Road. Once the car landed in the ditch the driver tried to run away, but police caught him.
"A lot of pursuits initiate from routine traffic stops but this type of accident is not one we see real often. He may have been trying to pass, he may have been trying to do a variety of things. His driving up to this point was not wild," said Capt. Kemp Shoun from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The man suffered minor injuries and was taken to University Hospital.
