WASHINGTON - The 2008 general election is wrapping up its first full week.
John McCain has said during campaign stops this week that this campaign can be reduced to 2 words: economy and security. Barack Obama believes the economy will be such a big issue that's he's in the middle of a two week economics tour.
One issue of disagreement that's been very public is how to relieve the pain at the pump. McCain supports a summertime gas tax holiday but Obama calls that a "gimmick". McCain says that it is typical of Obama not to want to give a tax break and that Obama's economic plan calls for many tax increases.
"Will we enact the single largest tax increase since the Second World War as my opponent proposes, or will we keep taxes low for families and employers?" asked Senator McCain.
Obama says he has a better way to save Americans money: a plan he says cuts taxes for 95 percent of workers. bama says that's better than tax breaks going to wealthy Americans.
"I've said that John McCain is running to serve out a third Bush term, but the truth is when it comes to taxes, that's not being fair to George Bush. Senator McCain wants to add $300 billion more in tax breaks and loopholes for big corporations and the wealthiest Americans," Obama said.
One of the leaders of Barack Obama's Vice Presidential search committee, Jim Johnson, stepped down after allegations that he got a sweetheart deal on a mortgage. The resignation was done hastily and only hours after the campaign had vigorously defended him. John McCain poked fun at a candidate running for President this week: himself.
"You know, I've never run a small, struggling enterprise...unless you count my Presidential campaign last year," he said.
Week one may be winding down, but there are still five months left until the election.
