After the flood of '93, Jefferson City officials took action to prevent future damage to homes.

"We used federal money to buy out all those properties. So there is virtually no one living north of the river. That's the area that is really flood prone," said Nathan Nickolaus, Jefferson City attorney.

The area used to be filled with houses and businesses, but now it is a parking lot. In other parts of the city, water spilled onto neighboring road ways, but there is hope on the horizon. City officials predict water levels will go down over the next couple of days because as the neighboring Missouri River water changes, it sucks the water out of the area. The rising water is causing some headaches, but it's also giving the community an opportunity to work together.

"Be courteous with them. Try to help your neighbor out. Be helpful with them. Respect other people," said Mike Rector, Jefferson City resident.

After the water goes down, Nickolaus says the city will continue to monitor water levels and check levees. Officials ask the public to stay off levees because driving on them could cause more damage.
