CAPE GIRARDEAU - Sen. Jim Talent said the U.S. government cannot write a new farm bill in 2007 until it reaches agreement with the World Trade Organization to protect American farmers.
Talent hosted the hearing with Sen. Saxby Chambliss, chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. Provisions of the farm bill are set to expire in 2007, so senators are trying to draft a new version. Talent said farmers need to have a global trade agreement before they can agree to any cuts in the farm bill program.
