JEFFERSON CITY - Uninsured Missourians spoke out Tuesday as Governor Blunt prepared his State of the State Address.
Health care is a major issue for Missouri legislators this year. Uninsured Missourians say cuts in health care in recent years makes life difficult for people on disability. Lawmakers met at the Capitol to discuss the future of health care.
Missouri's ProVote coalition said Blunt is overlooking the state of health care in Missouri. It said health care is in a state of crisis. Members of the coalition met Tuesday to discuss how health care cuts affect people on disability. The committee will hear testimony from health care experts and uninsured Missourians. But, Bob Pund said the issue affects more than just the uninsured and disabled.
"Disability is something everyone should be concerned about and the health care system because sometime in your life you're going to need access to that," he explained. "The health care system shouldn't just be fore the healthy."
"I see no reason why poor people and low income people shouldn't be able to get just as good of health coverage as wealthy people," said physician Hope Tinker.
Representative Schaaf said the health insurance programs like insure Missouri need more money then first projected. He said the legislature needs to consider the right way to approach health care.
Lawmakers will continue debating health care versus more spending in the next six weeks.
