BOONVILLE - Residents along the Missouri River had a near miss when the water in Boonville rose almost to the flood stage Wednesday afternoon.

Boonville water in the Missouri River has a natural ebb and flow. Some of those who live along the river, like David Oswald, have come to know it as a friend.

"We played by the river, I watched it all through my childhood, and I watch it almost daily now," Oswald, a Boonville resident, said.

The flood stage in Boonville is 21 feet. The river rose to more than 20 feet, but the water didn't quite get to the flood stage.

"It's a little high for this time of year, but the river fluctuates all the time," Oswald said.

There's one reason some residents along the river aren't alarmed by the water level. Boonville resident Rhonda Douglas said during the flood of '93, the water rose to over 30 feet.

"It totally got out of its banks. We were, our backyard, was almost at the level it was going to reach," Douglas said.

Water has been high all winter due to the large amount of precipitation. The Missouri River was also near the flood stage in Rocheport and Glasgow on Wednesday.
