COLUMBIA - The Central Missouri Humane Society, suffering with a limited budget, is a top ten finalist to win a $1 million makeover.

The Web site Zootoo.Com is going to award the money. In order to win the competition the shelter launched a community-wide campaign to get support, which paid off after making the final ten.

The shelter serves 53 counties across the state. Short on funds, the shelter has cut back on hours and days of operation.

The Central Missouri Humane Society also doesn't have enough room for all the animals. The center simply isn't big enough to serve all the communities in mid-Missouri.

Another large problem includes the ventilation system, which is not nearly strong enough for all the animals and workers. All problems that $1 million could fix.

"Currently we have 179 animals in our facilities. That's cats, dogs, bunnies - our staff tries to give the best quality of life. It's just very hard with a building that was built in the '70s with sub-par standards," said Halley Taylor from the center.

Being named in the top ten, the shelter gets a minimum of $20,000. It also received $10,000 for a preliminary win.

Now the competition is in the hands of the public to will decide who wins by voting.

Voting on Zootoo.com runs from April 13 to April 19, simply visit the link above.
