Recent DNR layoffs follow a controversy surrounding E. coli at the Lake of the Ozarks. One viewer claimed KOMU's story incorrectly linked job cuts at the DNR to "E. coli gate."

KOMU's story said, "the layoffs come as the division of state parks has been facing public scrutiny and an internal investigation for its failure to close some beaches despite water tests showing high bacteria levels."

Katherine wrote KOMU to say, "I was disappointed with your vague and misleading blurb this morning about the job cuts in DNR. The fact that the jobs were being cut from the Division of State Parks should have been prominent in the story...While the cuts have been mishandled, there is no link between them and E. coli in the waters surrounding state parks."

"I think it was a case of the viewer making a connection where we really didn't. It would be wrong for us not to put the background of the other problems at the DNR recently. And the viewer really put two and two together and saw a link that we really didn't put there," said news director Stacey Woelfel.
