Columbia's mayor wants you to watch the red-lights because the red-lights could be watching you. Caught on camera.

Mayor Darwin Hindman says he wants to bust dangerous drivers.

"There are serious accidents that occur at intersections due to people running red-lights," said Hindman.

Hindman is pushing to put red-light cameras on intersections and tickets in violators' mail boxes.

"The primary purpose of these is to prevent those serious accidents, to save lives, prevent injury, and to prevent serious property damage," said Hindman.

The camera would take a picture of the license plate of the car once it enters the intersection after the light turns red. The camera would not take a picture of the driver or passenger of the car which eliminates privacy issues.

"I think it would definitely make downtown safer and maybe have people think a little more before they just run across the street," said Katy Montague a Columbia driver.

But other drivers are not so sure.

"I don't think it would make much of a difference at all," said Chase Rome a Columbia driver.

Mayor Hindman says he wants to see some action before it's too late.

"I think it's going to be awful if we have a serious red-light accident by not acting and i think we should," said Hindman.

A report by City Attorney Fred Boeckmann says he is not sure the cameras are effective.Three Missouri cities have already approved the use of red-light cameras.The city council will review the idea at its February 20th meeting.
