Antidepressants
A new study shows taking antidepressants after suffering a stroke could help patients recover more of their memory. Researchers at the University of Iowa studied more than 100 stroke survivors who took either a problem solving class, a placebo pill or an antidepressant for 12 weeks.
Researchers found those taking the antidepressant scored higher on tests that looked at cognitive function and memory. They say certain antidepressants cause changes in brain structure, that do not affect behavior, but may improve verbal and visual memory.
Supplements
A report in the new edition of The Journal of the American College of Cardiology says mixing medicine with herbal products can be dangerous, even deadly. For example if you are on heart medication, grapefruit juice might increase effects of certain drugs and potentially cause dangerously low blood pressure or liver toxicity.
Also St. John's Wart, one of the top selling herbs in the U.S., can increase heart rate and blood pressure. Doctors say to decrease the risk for a potential drug interaction speak openly with your doctor about everything you are taking.
Zeltiq Lipo
There is a brand new way to reduce fat that requires no needles, anesthesia or incisions. You can sit and use your laptop or watch TV while you're doing it. It's called Zeltiq and it works by cooling fat cells in specific areas by triggering a natural response that causes the fat cells to disappear gradually. The doctor says the results should last, if patients stick with normal diet and exercise regimens.
