The Solid Rock Family Church made some noise to raise money to help one of their younger members.
The Solid Rock Family Church's youth band is holding a benefit concert to help its bass player pay for a new eye.
13-year-old Mike Margelony was squirrel hunting. His mother, Christine Florence, said Mike set down his pellet gun on the deck outside his home and a neighborhood child found the gun, got curious and decided to aim it at a tree. The gun fired and accidentally hit Mike in the left eye. Doctors were not able to save it.
Margelony underwent surgery to prepare his eye socket for a prosthetic, but Florence says she soon learned the insurance company would not pay for a glass eye.
"Mind boggling at times I can't even really comprehend it," said Margelony's step-father, Richard Florence. "My wife and I woke up early that Sunday morning wondering how my wife and I were going to pay for all this. "
Christine Florence, said it was extremely painful to hear the insurance would not cover the costs.
"They said it was cosmetic and not deemed necessary," said Florence. "Well you try to tell that to a 13-year-old going through life without an eye. "
Margelony's fellow bandmates decided they needed to do something to help their friend out.
"I heard the story and then my bass player Dusty...he heard it," said Justin Skiles. "Michael had mentioned it to him and he came to me and said we got to do something about this."
The family's medical bills could reach 50 thousand dollars, and Mike's glass eye could cost at least a couple thousand more.
The benefit concert will be held at 7pm on Friday, February 5, at the Solid Rock Family Church. Tickets are 5 dollars and available at the door.
