COLUMBIA - An estimated 2.3 million teens enter tanning salons annually, but many states are pushing to say no to teen tanning.

This year, Missouri joined 16 other states considering laws restricting indoor tanning by minors. Store owners recognize the issue and want to help.

"What it's up to us to do is to teach people that indoor tanning is a controlled environment," said Melanie Karrick, owner of Key Largo Fitness and Tanning. "We have smart tan certified operators that will help all of our tanners to not burn."

Different proposals would ban teens from indoor tanning or require a note from a parent or doctor.

"I don't think it should be up to parents," said tanner Brittany Dickemann. "I think a lot of reasons that some teenagers might tan is for self-esteem issues like acne and stuff like that."

While some in Missouri want lawmakers to pass a bill on the issue, 29 states already have regulations in place.

The American Cancer Society sent KOMU 8 a statement saying it supports any legislation banning minors from tanning salons.
