JEFFERSON CITY - Governor Jay Nixon signed a measure into law Friday that legalizes tractor parades on Missouri roads.

He said that these tractor parades are important for many Missourians as fundraisers.

"Agriculture has been the backbone of Missouri's economy since statehood," Nixon said.

Residents of Nottoway County were present, as well as a restored 1951 John Deere tractor. Senator Frank Barnitz of Lake Spring who handled the bill in the Senate and Representative Mike Thomson of Maryville who sponsored the bill. Thomson voiced how important tractors are for his constituents.

"You know in our area we've done these kinds of things for a long time but tractors are not just a tool, they're a passion," Thomson said.

The bill, written by Jon Hagler (director of the Missouri Department of Agriculture) and Col. James Keathley (superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol), contains an emergency clause that put the law into effect immediately upon Nixon's signature.

The first tractor parade is in Vichy on Sunday.
