ROCHPORT - Farmers' markets are growing in popularity and Bruce Arnett is growing the peaches to satisfy market buyers.

The Department of Agriculture now says there are more than 140 farmers' markets throughout the state.

Bruce Arnett is a mid-Missouri peach farmer who has been in the business for 20 years. He says he sells out every time he brings them to the Boone County Farmers Market.

"We pick about a ton (of peaches) a day, and all of those will (be ready to sell) today," said Bruce Arnett, peach farmer.

The increased amount of rainfall this summer has not hurt Arnett's peaches. In fact, it may have helped them.

"It took a lot of work to keep ahead of the rain. On the other hand, it's good because it makes for a larger peach," said Arnett.

His peaches travel 20 miles to get to your dinner table. The Department of Agriculture says food bought in a grocery store travels on average 15-hundred miles.

Arnett picked his peaches this morning and will take them to the Boone County Farmers Market at 4 p.m. today. Arnett takes about five percent of his peaches to the Boone County Farmers' Market and sells the rest from his farm, located just after the Rocheport exit on I-70.

"(I) wait until they're just a little bit on the soft side. At that point the tree has put as much sugar in them as it is going to and they're ripe and ready to eat," says Arnett.

Local farmers' markets are growing in popularity as concerns increase over food security. The tomato and pepper salmonella scare in recent months has caused some people to consider purchasing local foods.

Farmers' markets are actually a great boost for a local economy. Every one dollar spent at a market turns over six times in the community.

At the Boone County Farmers' Market today you can expect to see everything from blackberries and cantaloupes, to hot peppers and artichokes. The Boone County Farmers Market is open today and Wednesday from 4-6pm and Saturday mornings. The market is located at 1005 W. Worley Street in the parking lot of the Sanford-Kimpton Health Department Building.
