JEFFERSON CITY - Health care was a big issue during Tuesday's State of the State speech and the Democratic response.

KOMU put some of the claims to the test. KOMU took a look at two claims from Governor Blunt when he spoke about health care.

"We have increased health care spending," the Governor said in his speech.

The statement is true. The general revenue funding for mental health and health and senior services combine went from $702 million in Blunt's first budget is now $874 million. That increase is by about one-quarter of a percent of the state's total budget.

The governor also spoke about the state's ranking in the country for its health care.

"Missouri is among the 20 best states for the share of people with health coverage," he said.

The statement is true, but it is almost a stretch. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation's health comparison, Missouri ranks 19th for the percentage of population that has some form of health coverage.

Attorney General Jay Nixon provided the Democratic party's response to Blunt's speech. KOMU also looked at some of his statements on health care.

"Why are Missourians losing their health insurance at three times the national rate," he asked.

That is a true statement. The Kaiser Family Foundation data shows the rate of change in the number of uninsured Missourians who are between the age of zero to 64 is 1.9 percent. That is close to three percent the national rate of 0.6 percent. Looking deeper at that information shows the range of change in the number of uninsured Missouri adults who are 64 years old or younger is almost five times the national average. The data also shows the rate of Missouri children who are insured is basically equal to the national average. The Kaiser Foundation says people who are older than 64 are not included in the data because almost all are covered by Medicare or Medicaid.
