COLUMBIA - The murder of a 15-year-old boy from California because of his sexual orientation has sparked MU organizations to spread awareness about hate crimes.

Two of Mizzou's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender organizations are using this tragedy as inspiration for a week of awareness on LGBT issues and ended in a workshop to find solutions for hate.

Proceeds from events and T-shirt sales will benefit a local project that works to create a safe space for teenagers of the LGBT community, something they feel is currently lacking.

Even with the fund-raisers this week, they only raised a fraction of what is needed to open the center. As of now, they have less than half of their funding goal.

"One mission is to provide a safe space, especially for young people," said Karin Cone, treasurer of The Center Project.

The plan calls for a social space for young people, a resource library, meeting and work space areas, and a computer lab.The Center Project hopes to find a location in the downtown area to provide these services. They hope to open later this year and serve eight mid-Missouri counties.

"We really want to be out there," Cone said. "The goal of our center is not to be in the closet, because that's exactly the kind of attitude we're trying to change."
