COLUMBIA - The University of Missouri hosted an International Day Tuesday to honor students from countries across the world.
MU's campus caters to students from 107 different countries. And the chancellor says the goal is to expand the program until every country around the world is represented.
"We're united by that common commitment to integrating those experiences in a way that strengthens our educational process here at this university," MU Chancellor Brady Deaton said.
42 students stood shoulder to shoulder in front of the quad Tuesday holding flags and dressed in their traditional outfits.
"Our goal is to eventually have a flag for every single student at the university," Missouri International Student Council Vice President Nadege Uwase said.
After the flag ceremony, international students offered native food and crafts from their homelands.
Ajay Nagar came to MU 13 months ago as a graduate student from India. He says sharing different cultures creates better relationships.
"To know each other is how we can get better terms," Nagar said.
American students agree.
"We kind of take for granted the things we have everyday and the things that make our lives so easy," MU student Sara Pryor said. "And it just kind of helps to understand where other people come from and what conditions they live in."
"Say tomorrow, you'll go to India for a job or for anything. I can help you out. You understand each other better. It helps you traditionally. It helps you with business. It helps you for everything," MU Graduate Student Ajay Nagar said.
Among the 1,500 international students at Mizzou, some just want to be recognized.
"There are a very small number of Japanese here, so if you guys find us on campus randomly, just say hello to us," said MU student Yuki Shiratori.
MU International Day will be held on the fourth Tuesday of September each year.
