OKLAHOMA CITY - The Tigers run in the College World Series ended Saturday with a 5-2 loss to the Georgia Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs scored early in the first inning when sophomore Alisa Goler made a ground out RBI to shortstop allowing sophomore Taylor Schlopy to come home from third base. Georgia led 1-0.
In the third, the Tigers had an opportunity to go ahead but left two stranded on base. With one out, Georgia senior pitcher Christie Hamilton walked sophomore Abby Vock. Sophomore Rhea Taylor followed with a single down the left field line, but the half inning ended with two infield pop-ups.
Georgia extended its lead in the fourth inning as freshman Kristyn Sandberg homered to center field, scoring sophomore Brianna Hesson who had been on first base as well. The Bulldogs led 3-0.
While Missouri left another two runners on base in the top of the fifth, Georgia used the bottom of that inning to score two more runs. After freshman Lisaira Daniels and Schlopy got on base with a walk and a ball hitting the batter, respectively, Missouri threw a wild pitch allowing those two advance to second and third. Both then scored when senior Kristin Schnake doubled to right center.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the top of the sixth, but it wasn't enough. Sophomore Kathryn Poet and redshirt senior Micaela Minner both singled to get on base. Vock came in to pinch run for Minner as the next two Tigers got outs. Then sophomore Marla Schweisberger singled to centerfield and advanced to second during the throw, allowing Vock and Poet to score. The Tigers trailed 5-2.
While Missouri successfully prevented Georgia from scoring in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers were unable to score in the seventh and the Bulldogs ended the game by getting three successive outs.
The loss eliminated the Tigers from the College World Series. The Bulldogs will go on to play Michigan at 7 p.m. Saturday.
