GREENVIEW - One community is trying to become a village.
Greenview is a community with a population of 1,400. It has everything a town would need, such as banks, restaurants and a grocery store.
However, Greenview isn't a town. It's a subdivision, and it wants to change.
The Greenview Village Committee began plans to unify the region.
"We would like to take control of our community and be able to offer more for businesses to locate here with better infrastructure," said committee member Diana Sutherland.
She says Greenview needs to be able to regulate the highway they rely on for survival.
Sutherland says the committee wants to put shoulders and speed limits on the roads, options they don't have right now. She says the committee has been active for several months, but the idea has been around for years.
A recent MODOT construction project prompted the proposal.
"There was a plan, if you will, from MODOT for awhile to bypass Greenview from the first bridge, the Niagara bridge, and come behind some of the local businesses and then relocate by the Hurricane Deck bridge and so that would bypass numerous businesses," Sutherland said.
She says the major point residents keep bringing up is who is going to pay for the upkeep of a village. She says the plan to release a 1 cent tax on businesses with an estimated $140,000 annual revenue.
The committee plans to meet with the residents within 30 days.
