COLUMBIA - Every vote counts, even the one you cast for yourself.
Missouri's gubernatorial candidates all locked in at least one vote in their favor at polling places across the state Tuesday. Flanked by their loved ones and posing for the cameras, the three leading candidates for Governor cast their votes and crossed their fingers. They're all confident a victory is on the way.
"We had rallies yesterday all around the state. And the enthusiasm. I hope that enthusiasm is reflected at the polls today across the state, but it's really out of my hands now. It's at the hands of the voters and hopefully we'll survive this primary and look forward to moving on," said Republican candidate Kenny Hulshof.
His primary-day opponent, Sarah Steelman, said she was thinking about the people of Missouri.
"I've been running on a platform that talks about returning the voice of government to the people in this state and that's what's important to me. To know they will have a governor who puts their interests first," Steelman said.
On the Democratic side, candidate Jay Nixon said he is already looking ahead to the fall.
"I mean the difference between the candidates is very stark and very real. The bottom line is that we pledged to move forward, restore health care cuts, to make heartache more affordable. The other side hasn't made that same pledge obviously. We look forward to carrying this campaign in the fall," said Democratic candidate Jay Nixon.
The candidates all ran the final leg of the race a bit differently. Steelman actually went for a five mile jog early Tuesday morning. Hulshof had some trouble getting the automatic ballot reader to accept his vote, and Nixon spent the majority of his time at the polls arranging his family and friends for photos.
