A lawsuit states that a central Missouri historical site could be ruined by two million gallons of pig manure produced annually by a concentrated animal feeding operation.

The suit filed in Cole County says taxpayers have spent millions of dollars to restore and preserve the historic town of Arrow Rock.

But the suit says all of that is on the verge of ruin because the state issued a permit last month to allow a 4,800 hog farm near the village.

In August, the department approved the construction of a CAFO, concentrated animal feeding operation, that would allow about 5,000 swine to inhabit two buildings.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources said the farm is two miles away from Arrow Rock, and will not present any problems.

But the DNR Director, Doyle Childers, who is being sued says this is just a case of emotion versus facts.

"This needs to be someplace else, because this is everybody's backyard, this is a public asset, and we want to protect it," Arrow Rock resident David Finke said.

"If people really look at the facts, and they look at really what's out there, I think they'll understand how foolish and emotional this case is as opposed to the facts of how our parks are being treated and how they're being protected," said Doyle Childers, Director of DNR.
