The plan includes one more place people would not be able to light up.

"A patio's just a great place, you know, especially at bars, just to enjoy a drink and relax with friends," said Ashley Smith.

And soon, Columbia business patios could be smoke-free, although not everyone agreed with the proposed ban.

"I don't really see how the smoke can bother people if you're outside," said Meghan Kreshel.

"I'm a non-smoker, and smoking doesn't bother me on patios," added Tren Yager.

But, Patricia Schnitzer of the health board said it could bother other people. "Workers are still exposed to environmental tobacco smoke on patios," she said.

One reason the board wants to change the law is because some businesses don't have large enough patios to accomodate smokers and non-smokers.

Some business owners, like Chris Smith, don't mind the proposed ban.

"As long as everyone has to do it, it's fine with me," he said.

If the city council passes the patio ban, it will join other no-smoking areas, including commercial locations, elevators and restrooms, public transportation, indoor entertainment and recreation.
