The Show-Me State Games started this weekend, and hundreds of athletes showed off their skills. In this week's edition of Blumberg Off The Bench, meet a Mid-Missouri athlete who got her start at the Show-Me Games, and continues to win titles.
Faith Wright is a young gymnast from Moberly, but she trains at Flipz USA in Columbia. The almost daily commute doesn't bother her because she has a passion for her sport, and has since she can remember.
Faith started flipping early in life.
"I guess I was just born to do that because when I was two I did a round-off on the couch and the second I did that my mom was like we need to put her in gymnastics," said Faith.
Proof of her passion is in marker, a picture she drew when she was only seven years old. It has a message with a goal.
"When I am older I want to persevere to be an MU gymnast." These are the words written on the picture.
"And her school teacher said... I think you can do it," Faith's mother, Karen Wright said.
Faith is now nine, and she continues to persevere.
"I've had that goal since I was five, because gymnastics is my life. It's not like a hobby... It's my life," said Faith.
The proof is in the pictures, shot after shot of Faith with medals and trophies. She's won talent show titles and Missouri state gymnastic championships, state games of America accolades.
"Yes I did... I don't like to brag, but yes I did," said Faith.
She's collected close to 100 medals.
"She just loves to go out and perform... without being afraid. She'll go out to multiple talent shows throughout the year, Faith's coach Zina Fudge said.
What's just as amazing as the routine is who designed it.
"It started a couple of years ago. She just started moving in the living room and I said, 'Wow where did you learn that, because I don't let you watch things like that on tv,'" Karen Wright said.
Faith choreographs her own show, almost unheard of in the gymnastics world.
"Not very many, she's one in a million on being able to choreograph her own and us just touch it up a little bit," said Fudge.
Faith says the choreographing came naturally.
"I'm also a dancer and I just love dancing, and that's how I kind of mixed it in with dancing and gymnastics at the same time," said Faith.
Faith proved she can balance more than just gymnastics when she took a shot at the Miss Missouri Pre-Teen competition.
"Last year we gave it a try, and her first year in the competition she won the Missouri state title," Karen Wright said.
Faith was surprised by her success.
"I couldn't hardly believe it... I came this far and I succeeded on my first try," said Faith.
She's caught on quick, and sticks to serious practice hours. 20 hours per week in the summer, and 16 during the school year.
"It just gives me a great pleasure to be doing something like this because it gives people a great opportunity to enjoy life, and stay active at the same time," said Faith.
The happiness Faith receives is hard to contain.
"I'm happy all the time... It's so weird," said Faith.
She still has her eyes on making her drawing a reality, and she believes she will prove it correct.
"I want to go to Mizzou and get a scholarship," said Faith.
In the Miss National Pre-Teen Competition, she won the interview competition, and finished third in talent, which of course was gymnastics. She says her plan after college is to choreograph gymnastics routines. Faith plans to compete in gymnastics in the Show-Me State Games later this month.
