COLUMBIA - The sounds and smells of an African feast filled the Gaines-Oldham Black Cultural Center Thursday night.

The dinner was the final event of a week celebrating Africa. A $6 ticket gave attendees all the African fried rice, plantain, and home made pastries they could eat.

The proceeds from the night's feast benefited a charity supplying wheelchairs to hospitals in Nigeria.

The event attracted people of all ages and from a variety of backgrounds.

"People love food, they like to eat and since this is something different, they wanna try it out. And I think the fact that there is a charity as well probably motivated some people as well of course. So, I think that's probably the two main reasons why people came out tonight," said co-director of Africa Week, Evelyn Okunbor.

The sold-out event raised more than $600 and will help pay for shipping the wheelchairs to Africa.

Mail donations to Wheelchairs for Africa at AO22 Brady Commons Columbia, MO 65211.
