SALINE COUNTY - Every so often, teachers get the opportunity to become students.

In a little county, on a quiet gravel road you'll find a magnificent piece of land with a history lesson that's anything but small.

It's a plantation called Oak Grove that's been around more than 150 years. It is a place stooped in rich history, a history that many Missouri school teachers want to know more about.

"It was a great opportunity to come and learn about Missouri history and to bring it back to fourth graders because they study Missouri history," said Gennie Pfannenstiel, a Missouri teacher.

The walking tour is a workshop put on by the town of Arrow Rock to teach Missouri teachers the history of the state in hopes that they will take the knowledge back to the classroom.

"One of the things we're talking about today with our teachers is the strong southern culture that was here in the Boone's Lick or what some call the Little Dixie," said Kathy Borgman, a member of Friends of Arrow Rock.

During the day the teachers got a hands on lesson right out of a book with guest speakers sharing stories of everyday life on a plantation including stories from Oak Grove.

"For me, I learn like the children, by being here, by doing hands on things, to actually touch the cotton, the hemp, the tobacco," said art teacher Ann Mehr.

They also took time to tour the grounds. The house was built in 1854 by George Murrell and has stayed in the family for the five generations. Murrell's great great grandson, Blaine McBurney, spent years restore it to its original condition.

Throughout the day teachers learned about daily life of both slaves and owners, something Kathy Borgman says can be a touchy subject."We need in history to have a perspective of those things we are proud of but we also need to have a realistic look at those things we are not proud of," she said.

This was the seventh year for the workshop and Borgman says it was the best turnout they've ever had.
