ST. LOUIS (AP) - August is almost always hot in St. Louis, but this one appears headed for a record. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch Web site, STLtoday.com, reports today that the hottest August on record averaged 84.9 degrees in 1947. Through yesterday, the National Weather Service says this month's average reading in St. Louis is 86 degrees. So far, 17 days this month have seen highs of 95 or above, and six days have reached triple-digits, including yesterday's 100-degree reading. The extreme heat will again mean a short school day in St. Louis. About one-third of St. Louis school buildings lack air conditioning. Today's projected high is 98, before a weekend cool-down. Tomorrow's high is expected to reach only into the 80s.
