COLUMBIA - The CDC says children are at high risk of serious complications from the flu.

Boone County health officials are targeting children to make sure they have access to the vaccine.

A few weeks ago, Missouri did not have access to the flu shots at all. A ban on mercury-containing vaccines meant kids could only get the flu mist.

The problem is, only a small portion of children are eligible for it.

"We weren't receiving pediatric doses of preservative-free H1N1 vaccines, so those kids that were not eligible for flu mist, were not receiving the vaccine," said Genalee Alexander from the Boone County Health Department.

State officials recently put a temporary lift on the mercury ban. That's why the vaccine in shot form is available Wednesday.

The vaccines are completely free, but there's a limited supply available from 1 to 5 Wednesday on West Worley.
