The bad news is obvious: Missouri football is on an ugly three-game losing skid. The good news is that Colorado is up next and the Tigers have had the Buffaloes number recently. In the past two seasons, Missouri has outscored Colorado 113-10. It all started in 2007, when the Tigers won 55-10 in Boulder for the first time since 1997. Last season in Columbia, the Tigers trounced the Buffaloes once again, this time winning 58-0. Colorado has been struggling this season as they are last in the Big 12 in scoring and yards-per-game.
"They switched quarterbacks, have a relatively young football team," explains Missouri coach Gary Pinkel. "Offensively, they're doing things they've always been doing. They had an injury at running back, too, so they're kind of going through that."
"We went to their place a couple years ago," says Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon. "They came out and jumped on us, but we matched it. We came back and we did some pretty good things. And then last year, we just came off a big loss from Texas, just like now and we were focused and we were ready to play in front of the home crowd. But [this year] we go to their place. It's going to be a hostile environment."
For the first time in his career, former walk-on and Missouri backup quarterback saw time on the field against the Texas Longhorns. Costello went 3-5 for 25 yards, but threw two interceptions. Blaine Gabbert will start on his gimpy ankle against Colorado, but Costello knows he is only a play away from being in the battle.
"He a tough guy and he's going to play through whatever he can," says Costello of Gabbert. "And if they call me, I'll be ready. First drive, I was a little nervous, but after the first couple plays, that all goes away and it's all football."
Costello and the Tigers will play Colorado in boulder on Saturday at 12:30 PM.
