COLUMBIA-The new year is here and with the start of the new year also comes the peak for flu season, which will come in February.

The Boone County Health Department said that a flu shot can be a life saver.

The department is trying to get patients vaccinated, with some extra vaccines received this year. Chris Coffman, the nurse supervisor said, "We started out thinking about 400 doses, and then we upped it to 1500 doses and they sent it to us about two weeks ago."

The clinic of the department is using flu mist vaccine, which will work just as a shot would but it is applied through the nose. This vaccine is free.

The state's number shows that the deaths from the flu along with pneumonia are up. Harvey Marx, an official of Missouri Disease Control and Prevention, said, "This year we've had 811 deaths due to pneumonia and influenza, and normally we see around 695."

But according to Missouri Department of Health, the state has averaged 398 cases of flu during the last five years. This year, The state has seen 324 cases so far, that is down 19 percent.

The clinic said that although the number of cases is down, it is important to realize that the peak for the flu has not hit yet. To prevent getting the flu, experts suggest get the flu shot or flu mist, take care of yourself, or frequently wash your hands.

The Boone County Health Department also said the cost of not having a flu shot is substantially lower than getting the flu. The cost of hospitalization from related illness could result in about $13,000 worth of hospital bills.
