JEFFERSON CITY - Congress is moving forward with subsidy negotiations, despite slashing Amtrak's budget back in March.
With help from Missouri Congressmen, Amtrak will still have two daily passenger trains across the state.
Committee legislators agreed money is exactly what Amtrak needs to keep two trains running from St. Louis to Kansas City. House and Senate budget negotiators say the train service needs an additional $8 million. That means Amtrak trains will get to keep coming through Jefferson City.
Republican Rep. Ed Robb said keeping two trains running across Missouri is important.
"The reason we need two is that if you took the train from St. Louis to Kansas City, you would be there overnight. You would not be able to get back the same day," said Robb.
Robb also says some legislators would like to see an Amtrak route moved to Springfield. Because of the high price of gas, a station in Springfield could be cost effective for passengers. The station would also bring traffic to the Branson area.
None of the changes will be decided until next year.
The trains between Kansas City and St. Louis should keep running until further notice.
The House and Senate still need to approve the $8 million subsidy amount separately.
