COLUMBIA - One local organization is worried that health care is disappearing in rural Missouri, calling the crisis the "Bermuda Triangle" of health care.
Robin Acree of Grass Roots Organizing says GRO noticed the trend when its members began to examine rural parts of the state with health care disparities.
The non-profit group traveled around Missouri over the weekend and visited with rural Missourians to hear their health care stories.
"Our first road trip made a triangle. We named it the Bermuda Triangle of Health Care where health care is just vanishing and disappearing in our small towns across the state," Acree said.
She said GRO started off with this particular triangle connecting Mexico, Shelbina and Hannibal, Missouri. The group's next step is trying to find other rural areas to visit as part of Heath Care for America NOW.
Acree said the economy and job losses are playing a big role in rural Missourians not having health care.
"The Pace plant just closed in Hannibal and there were people there who were just devastated. They've worked there all this time and now they're being faced with the same dilemma that a lot of Missourians are being faced with," said Acree.
