HERMANN - Sometimes it's the smallest communities that have the biggest arguments.

At least that's the case in Gasconade County where a argument on Thursday could trigger another lawsuit.

One group is once again accusing county officials of breaking the law. The Gasconade County Courthouse society wants the county seat to stay in Hermann while two county commissioners want it moved to Owensville. Today's commission meeting sparked a war of words. As one society member wanted to make sure the commissioners' petition was legal this time.

Gasconade County Courthouse society member Sharon Meyer wants to know how many voters there really are in Gasconade County.

"Mrs. Lietzow expressed that we have 10,275, which is only a twelve person gain from November of 2006," said Meyer.

Meyer worries the county clerk doctored the numbers in 2006 to increase chances of a successful petition to move the county seat from Hermann to Owensville. That year, citizens of Hermann won a lawsuit to throw out that petition. Now, two of the county commissioners are trying to circulate a new one. That concerns Meyer because she fears the clerk and the two commissioners are committing voter fraud. She says one commissioner signed the petition four times and also claims the clerk counted his name every time.

"Because in the 2006 petition to move the county seat, Commissioner Lairmore's name appears on the top line of four separate pages," stated Meyer.

Commissioner Lairmore says someone could have forged his signature.

"My name was only counted one time, so I don't know what the relevancy of signing it more than once, whether it was signed more than once. I have no idea what she's talking about," said Lairmore.

This is one argument that could once again end up in court. Meyer says she wants the petition process to be legal so the county doesn't have to pay for another lawsuit. Commissioner Lairmore said he's focused on getting the 2008 petition passed.
