COLUMBIA - Superintendent Phyllis Chase held a news conference Thursday discussing her intention to reduce her salary by 10 percent for the upcoming school year.
The Columbia School District currently has a $9.1 million deficit for the upcoming school year. Assistant Superintendent Lynn Barnett released a statement Wednesday saying Chase would voluntarily reduce her salary. Chase proposed a $20,000 salary cut.
Employees within the administration building are also taking an average 2.4 percent pay cut regardless of their salary. The Board of Education signed off on her recommendation and praised Chase for her leadership and dedication to the district. Chase's pay cut is only for the upcoming school year.
The board came to a decision after two and a half hours. The details will not be released until Friday morning.
