JEFFERSON CITY - The issue of riverboat gambling was brought up at a council meeting on Monday night.
Fifteen years ago, Jefferson City passed a city provision allowing casino-boat gambling, but only three years later the voters changed their mind and passed a provision against it.
Councilman Kevin Brown is leading the cause to repeal Jefferson City's provision preventing riverboat gambling. Community members spoke in front of the council to express their own concerns about any such repeal. For many, this was a moral issue.
"For the most part we are a Christian community," attendee Sara Ferrill said. "Our city council members open with prayer. We pledge one nation under God. It's important for us Christians to stand up for what the Bible teaches us is right."
Council members Jim Penfold, Jane Smith and Cindy Layton said they are also against the repeal. The rest of the city council will cast their votes later in December.
