COLUMBIA - Stryker Sulak is the latest defensive lineman in a long line of Missouri sack artists.
Sulak's goal to get the quarterback is the same for every play and he's a big, fast and quick defensive end.
Offensive lineman blocking him rarely ever get a good look at who they're trying to stop, but a camera has a way of showing a true picture of Sulak.
He strikes fear in the quarterback and wreaks havoc with the offense. But according to his teammates, he's not a terror 24/7.
"If you saw him not around the football facilities you might not even know he plays football," junior linebacker Sean Weatherspoon said.
"In class he's a totally different dude, you'd probably think he's one of the frat guys," senior defensive lineman Ziggy Hood said.
Sulak is man with two sides and two names.
"Joseph's my real name and Stryker's my middle," Sulak said. "In kindergarten, the first day I showed up, that's what they called me, 'Stryker.' So I was like, 'Alright, it doesn't matter.'"
He's a laid back guy and the proof is in a picture. His personality pours out of page 167 of the 2008 Missouri Media Guide.
"I don't know what it is. It's just a goofy pose that hit me at that moment," Sulak said. "I don't know, I wanted to break the mold of being the tough dude. So I just did that."
Sacking quarterbacks is his specialty. Coming into the Baylor game, Sulak had 18 sacks in his career, a stat good for fourth place on the Tigers' all-time charts.
He's behind Tigers' career sack master Brian Smith.
"Brian was here when I was here and that guy was unreal watching him play. There's no way I could ever match it, but I'd love to be up there around him," Sulak said.
But he's getting closer. Sulak leads the Tigers in sacks this season.
"Whenever you're getting up from sacking them, everything goes quiet and then real loud. The crowd goes nuts and it's something few people get to experience and I'm blessed to get to experience that," Sulak said.
But Sulak doesn't just go for the sack. He has turnover on his mind.
Through eight games, he has forced four fumbles and is tied for the most in the Big 12.
"I'm kind of conscious of that all the time," Sulak said. "If we get the ball back we give it to our offense and that's a plus for us, getting our offense back on the field and getting to rest."
"He's the type of guy that has a motor that never stops," Weatherspoon said. "When the quarterback throws the ball, he might make the tackle 15 yards down the field."
Although his picture shows a soft side, he's tough on game day.
"He's real mean on the field, though. He makes me want to cry sometimes," Hood said.
But he brings tears of joy for Tiger fans.
Sulak said he plans to do some traveling after college and then possibly look for a career sacking bad guys in law enforcement or firefighting.
