COLUMBIA - The official start of the winter season is still another five weeks away, but Saturday you may have seen the first snow flurries of the season.

Local stores might be prepared now, but experts say this winter might be a doosy.

"We have been above average as far as participation is concerned all year long. If we continue on the same trend, I am expecting the same thing to continue. Above average precipitation weather, that's ice or even snow,"said weather caster Anthony Slaughter.

The heaviest snow fall mid-Missouri has seen in recent years is back on December 1, 2006 when around 16 inches fell. The University of Missouri canceled classes, for the second time ever. Chances of this happening again might be higher this winter.

"That was a memorable day. It's too far to tell right now. But if we continue on the same patterns of having excessive rain fall in a day or two translate that into snow and the possibility is there," stated Slaughter.

To handle the winter weather, it is best to stay prepared.

"Just make sure you have everything you need. Salt winterize your car. Continue to take care of your car just as you would in the summer time but just for the winter. And of course, keep those heaters on. Keep the fire wood, whatever you need to stay warm. And you know keep it here to komu 8. We will keep you safe too," explained Slaughter.

It is best to get gear right now because so many people get their shovel and salt last minute which leaves stores running out.
