COLUMBIA - With both the presidential and gubernatorial elections on the horizon, 2008 is a busy year for voters. For Columbia residents, there is also another important upcoming election.
On Thursday, petitions were due for this April's Columbia City Council elections. Two of the city's six wards are up for election. Both the first and fifth ward terms expire this April. The city clerk has received a total of five petitions.
One of those is Almeta Crayton, the incumbent first ward city council member. Paul Sturtz, John Clark and Karen Baxter have also filed petitions to run for the first ward city council position.
Laura Nauser currently holds the fifth ward city council seat. She is the only person to submit a petition for the fifth ward.
Elections for those positions are on April 8th. Jefferson City, Boonville and Fulton have already filed petitions for their city councils.
