JEFFERSON CITY - After Gov. Blunt's announcement not to run for governor again, KOMU looks back at Missouri's history of governors.
There's a bit of notoriety in Matt Blunt's decision not to run for governor again.
Let's begin in 1964 with Warren Hearnes, he was the first governor following a constitution change who could serve two terms and he did.
Kit Bond replaced him in 1972, but sure enough 4 years later, he was upset by Joe Teasdale.
Move ahead 4 years, and it was Bond defeating Teasdale and returning to the governor's office.
Now lets jump to 2000, Bob Holden becomes the governor, but 4 years later he didn't even win his party's primary. He lost and Matt Blunt became Missouri's 54th governor.
So with Blunt's announcement on January 23, he becomes the first Missouri governor who voluntarily leaves office after one term.
Prior to 1964, Missouri governors could only serve one term.
