COLUMBIA - Four-year-old Hadley Smith started an organization to care for orphans in Africa. She sells chocolate chip cookies door-to-door in the Stoneridge subdivision.
"I just thought of it," Hadley said.
"My sister-in-law is in Africa doing mission work and one night we were putting together a care package for Amanda, and Hadley came in and put in her crocs and flashlight cause she knew there was a lot of orphans in Africa who didn't have homes or parents. She came up with the idea herself," said Hadley's mother Kristin Smith.
"I know that they're scared and they don't have any homes or beds to sleep in or any light. It made me feel sad," Hadley said.
So far Hadley's charity has brought in about $150. She hopes to start providing solar power flashlights for African children.
"We really want to instill in her that this world is much bigger than Columbia," Kristin said. "There are children with real needs all over. This has been fun for us to help her understand that just as little as she is she can still do something that's important."
Hadley said she is also praying for the orphans.
Right now, orphans in northern Kenya are using Hadley's flashlights.
