COLUMBIA - The Missouri High Steppers program brings together youth in Columbia, giving them the opportunity to learn to be "gentle in manner and resolute in deed."
But dozens and dozens of youth are missing out on this opportunity.
"Just in Columbia itself, there's probably 200 or 300 on waiting list,"said Missouri High Steppers founder Rolando Barry. "And we're not even talking about Moberly, Mexico, Fulton."
This is because the High Steppers drill team has no permanent home.
The performers practice in different school gymnasiums, often having to share with other organizations and activities. Sometimes they even have to practice in hallways.
With 60 youth members in the program, there's little space for practice in crowded gymnasiums, and with more than 200 others waiting in line, the High Steppers need a permanent place to practice.
Sixth grader Alex Shaffer is a member of the High Steppers and said he has greatly benefited from the program.
"It makes you feel good. It's just a joy...and just a pleasure to do it," said Shaffer.
Barry said the High Steppers program and the support from fellow performers has helped Shaffer get through the loss of his father.
"His pop was very supportive he would come and help me at practice," said Barry. "He would motivate the kids and all the time he was there. When that happened, he was torn up. Like anyone would losing a father. But the drill team helped him get through that."
At the moment, the High Steppers still have not been able to find a permanent home.
