COLUMBIA - Columbia city leaders said they are not proud that more than 30 bicycle accidents have happened within the city in the past two years.

Those accidents injured 26 people and killed one. The Columbia Police Department is working to improve the safety of roads for bicyclists.

A program called Operation Share the Road boosts enforcement of city ordinances and state statues.

The organization wants to remind bike riders of things like having reflectors in the front and back of the bike for low light situations, and that bike-riding on sidewalks in business districts is illegal. Cyclists must ride in the same direction of traffic and obey traffic devices like stop signs and red lights.

Motorists have the obligation to pass bicyclists, but only when it is safe to do so.

Operation Share the Road officially begins Wednesday.
