COLUMBIA - Starting in November, some Columbians will pay more for electricity so that the city can add solar energy to the list of natural resources available.

Local businesses teamed up with Columbia Water & Light to improve the environment. The "Solar One" program lets residents invest in solar energy.

Solar energy is still two to three times more expensive than other resources. The monthly $4 pays for one of the 70 panels to generate a portion of the city's power.

"As a Solar One customer, what you're paying for is that extra cost to produce solar energy for the Columbia system entirely," said Columbia Water & Light spokesperson Connie Kacprowicz.

Solar One customer Dick Parker signed up and hopes he will get paid back through the growth of solar energy.

"I think it's important for the city to have the opportunity to evaluate how they will integrate solar power to our system," Parker said.

Parker says the city needs to act fast to help the environment.
