COLUMBIA- The Missouri defense is off to a solid start this season. In this week's edition of Blumberg Off The Bench, see how the Tigers' defensive line has a pair of newcomers making an instant impact.
When you think about Missouri football history Faurot and Devine come to mind, but the most successful name on the back of a Tiger jersey is probably Smith.
Aldon Smith red-shirted his first season. Sitting and watching wasn't easy.
"That's for any athlete. If you think you can be out there and play and you're not playing it hurts a lot to watch. So last year it hurt," said Aldon Smith.
Now Aldon Smith is putting the hurt on quarterbacks. But, he's not alone on the defensive line. He's not even the only Smith. Jaquies Smith joins him.
"We know how to get back there and harass quarterbacks and put a little pressure in his face," Jacquies Smith said.
The Smith's are both defensive ends, but Missouri has a special defense designed to put them both on the field at the same time.
"It's basically a dime slash scorpion or something like that. They just gave it some type of nickname to it," said Jacquies Smith.
A nickname living up to it's billing.
"It's cool. I mean, that's a very effective animal. It packs a sting when it gets you. That's what we try to do out there on the field. We try to pack a nice little sting out there," Jacquies Smith said.
Both scorpions strike quickly, but they go about it differently.
"Aldon's more trim. He's taller and has longer arms. He's got one percent body fat. He's a freak of nature," Jacquies Smith said.
The freak actually has four percent body fat, and the secret to his dietary success is surprising.
"I eat what everybody else eats. I eat McDonald's and everything like that. I don't eat all these fruits and vegetables that you see in the health magazines," Aldon Smith said.
Smith and Smith continue a long legacy at Mizzou of uncommon excellence from the common last name. Brian Smith is Mizzou's all-time sack leader with 31.5. Nine more than second place Justin Smith, the highest NFL draft pick in Missouri history.
And don't forget that quarterback, Brad Smith.
"Every Smith that's come through here has played pretty great. We're trying to make a name for ourselves as well as keep the tradition of the Smith's going as well," Jacquies Smith said.
"Brian, and Justin, and also the quarterback Brad. So hopefully I can be one of the greatest Smith's," Aldon Smith said.
Smith is the most common last name in the United States. It beats out Johnson, Williams, and Jones with about 2.5 million people called Smith. So far this season Aldon Smith has two and Jaquies Smith has one and a half sacks.
