COLUMBIA - Talk about the future of the Columbia Regional Airport really took off Wednesday.
A new master plan is in the works to improve the airport's infrastructure. Some changes include fixing the runways and firefighting facilities.
Columbia Regional has seen more travelers recently than in the past five years. Shorter security lines and free parking aren't the only thing attracting more flyers. Airport officials say Mesaba Airlines has helped.
"They have over 90 non-stop destinations out of Memphis even to some international destinations such as Cancun and Amsterdam to get you to Europe, so we're seeing a lot of utilization of those services," said airport manager Kathy Frerking.
The master plan will focus on improving airport conditions for the next 20 years.
