BOONVILLE - The Boonville Daily News' investigation into Boonville High School's student newspaper found there was no protocol for school administrators to review the Pirate Press.

School officials pulled the paper before press because they say it published quotes that both teachers and students found offensive.

Many students did not like the racism and the homophobia that was put into the newspaper, BHS senior Sam Mendez says.

A feature on homosexuality had a quote from a student saying he thought LGBT students are freaks.

We dont use that language, District Superintendent Mark D. Ficken says. We wouldnt expect to publish that language when we dont say those things in any of our school buildings.

Boonville School District Superintendent Mark Ficken had said in earlier interviews that the school principal was responsible for reviewing the paper before it went to press.

The protocol, he said, had existed for as long as he's had his job, about three to four years.

"I think there's a lot of educational value in a school newspaper," Ficken says. "I just think we need to use better judgment."

"I'm disappointed that there's no protocol," Boonville Daily News publisher Deborah Marhsall says. "I hope that with this investigation, what we have done in our community, we'll initiate a protocol so that there will be one in place and one that is written."

The Boonville Daily News will run three articles about its findings this week.
